I’m higher than you. I’ve spent the entire morning listening to Taylor Swift’s “Fearless” album.
The reason I adore her so much is that when I listen to her music, I don’t think it’s revolutionary.
She understands the artistic function is to create some understanding or conveyance of perspective to the viewer. As such, she just spits her diary pages out over a guitar and those are her songs. Much of the first album is just meaningless 15 yearold angst, but it’s some of the truest angst ever spit on a microphone.
You might say, “Well, what about My Chemical Romance?” That’s simple. I like her better, so I’m willing to listen to her angst much more than theirs.
Believe me or not, it’s pretty Joycian. Throughout Fearless, she orders her tracklist in such a manner that she can show her maturation and personal devolpment as an unassigned narrator in the album. It’s the story of a girl portrayed in such a way it pretends there is no observer’s paradox. You feel dirty reading her diary, but that’s just because she’s actually published it so purely you feel it in its original context.
Over the course of an hour, you witness her developing a full 4 years. She does it seemlessly. Her narrative perspective and ideas clearly change and grow in complexity as she learns from herself, but she doesn’t abandon the roots from which her music came. She still sings Fifteen as strongly and powerfully as she sings White Horse.
It’s not quite a stream of consciousness narrative, but she really does give her most honest interpretation of the thoughts of young, confused girl who finds herself alone and longs for international stardom.
And it’s too late for you and your white horse to catch her now.
The next major war between two first world nations will involve more digital warfare than this world can even predict.
Just imagine if you hacked a predator drone. For that matter, imagine if you hacked all of them. The cool thing about GPS is that it’s on and running at the time of launch, right? Well, how about a quick “return to sender” virus that puts in a preprogrammed route to attack “home.” This sounds pretty bad to me, and it’s only one example.
It resonates strongly with me what Albert Einstein once said of war:
We really don’t know what weapons will be used the Third World War, but in the fourth they’ll be using stones and sticks.
“This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires and lights in a box. There is a great and perhaps decisive battle to be fought against ignorance, intolerance and indifference. This weapon of television could be useful.”—http://www.turnoffyourtv.com/commentary/hiddenagenda/murrow.html
